Katie Blecker (she/her)

Art-making has always been an essential part of my self-expression and exploring the world around and within me. My current studio practice revolves around mixed-media sculpture making, drawing on skills from a background in textile arts, costuming, and illustration.

My work depicts forms and motifs inspired by the natural world, taking the shape of enchanting and peculiar creatures, both familiar and seemingly from another time and place. Often inspired by my love of folklore, each piece is mindfully created with a precise attention to detail.

As a primarily-homebound, multiply-chronically ill queer person, I am also experimenting with infusing this work with subtle themes surrounding my experience with Disability. Currently, this is expressed through the haunting feel of my sculptures. In this way, I am expressing what life is like as a high-risk person living in a nonconforming (and sometimes haunted-feeling) body.

When I'm not in my home-based art studio, you'll find me teaching adaptive yoga, spending time with my partner and our bird, reading, playing Nintendo Switch, and resting. Join me for online yoga classes at www.katiebleckeryoga.com
